Getting Started with Social Media Marketing: 5 Things You Can Take Today
Posted on March 19, 2018 in Social Media
Getting results on social media is hard. Getting results on social media when you’re not a social expert is even harder. There’s plenty of content online telling you how to plan and analyze campaigns, but many business owners barely have time to get started on social, let alone run a 12-month campaign.
We put together this blog to give you some ideas for things you can do right now, today. The most important thing to remember is that all successful campaigns start with a couple of baby steps. Let’s get to it!
1. Post something on social media every day – including today!
Competition on social media has never been more fierce. A zillion companies are vying for everyone’s attention and focus, every second of every day. If you’re not posting daily, you can fall off the map when it comes to your audience’s attention. People are busy – if you’re not putting something on their news feed on a regular basis, they’re going to forget about you.
When considering if your content is good to post, just ask yourself if your adding value to someone who is seeing it. It doesn’t have to be anything groundbreaking – post a picture of your office, show off a work in progress, share an update about products or services, etc. Everything helps.
2. Identify your target demographic and figure out how to reach them through social media.
No brand or business is one-size fits all. Stop and think about who your target demographic is, then think about what type of content they want to see.
Marketing to college students? Stick to entertaining content, or offer practical advice for writing essays and cram study sessions. Trying to reach middle-aged suburban moms? Try posting recipes, or videos about fun activities to do with kids on the weekends.
3. Be visual.
Smartphones have obliterated our attention spans. People skim through their news feeds at light speed – to break through, you’re going to need content that’s visceral and eye-catching. Dynamic videos and colorful images will draw more people in than a few bare lines of copy.
4. Interact and engage with your audience on social media.
Social media isn’t an echo chamber. People log on for hours every day to connect with each other, to tap into a greater community. You can’t just post advertisements and expect success – that’s like going to a party, telling everyone to buy your product, then immediately walking out the door.
You have to put your best foot forward and take part in the conversation. Respond to comments, both positive and negative. Show appreciation that people are commenting, and demonstrate concern when someone seems disappointed. It makes a BIG difference.
5. Share solid content from other sources.
Social media is a lot of work, but you don’t have to do it all yourself. There’s nothing wrong with sharing great content from other sources – your audience will still appreciate that you’re putting quality content on their news feed.
Success with social media marketing takes a lot of time and hard work. It doesn’t happen overnight, but if you put in a little bit of time every day, amazing things will happen.
